A CABBIE who feared for his passengers as his maxi taxi was attacked by a youth hurling rocks wants politicians and courts to crack down on juvenile offenders before it's too late.

Kevin Jones, 59, was waiting at Weir State School on Ross River Rd, Kirwan, to pick up a fare when a child, aged between 10 and 12, began throwing rocks at his cab about 12.30am on Sunday.

"All of a sudden, this child kicked the front passenger door in and came to my side and threw a large rock in the back sliding door window and almost broke that," he said.

"Then he threw another one at me and almost broke my window.

"I drove 20m up the road and saw a big group of between 20 and 30 kids, by the looks of it they were ready to mug people."

Mr Jones said the youths were aged from 10-18 and appeared to be drunk.

"I reckon if I had got out of the cab to chase (the attacker), I'd have been jumped on by the lot of them," he said.

Mr Jones said it was not the first time he had seen large groups of youths loitering near the school or at Riverway.

"When everyone's at school, you'll see them and in the early morning on the weekends," he said.

"On the holidays they're out every night. There's a real safety concern."

Mr Jones said harsher punishments were needed for young criminals and authorities needed to act before vigilantes did.

"The police can't do anything because the politicians and the courts don't back them," he said.

"It's going to happen, a vigilante group will go and wipe the park out
